Found your site after a search in Google. I'd be interested to see what you think of our New Revelations community's discussion section, especially a recent debate entitled 'For the love of God'. Our community has over 200 members, and there are about ten vocal atheists, ten vocal evangelicals, and a couple of Muslims, Jews, Hindus, etc. along with many agnostics. See what you think! Cheers and, of course, GOD BLESS! ;-)
Response from Ethical Atheist: Readers: If interested, you can check out the New Revelations group HERE.Follow up from:

Atheist or Religious? none (muslim)
well i sent you guys an email..but it didnt show up on the comments page..was it too long?? well theres something id like to point out about our religon which no one can really answer..and they call me a "kafir"..which is an unbeleiver.. basically its "god has all power over the whole universe...and everything is within his power."..question is..can god let someone out of his power if hes so powerful..and if he does..then he isnt within his power..is he?.. well thought it be a start to the muslim problems page, but as a muslim, im interested in your response.. its always good to keep a good open mind, dont you think.. and tell me if you recieved my last reply..thnx
Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, we received it, but just haven't had time to post it yet. It did look like it got cut off at the end. Here's how it ended: "i know alot of people who are willing to kill themselves in order to kill israeli troops. the mentality to this is that most palestinian..." We'll get your messages posted soon. I'm going to add a note to it saying "Reminder, this is a reader's view, not ours... but, we try not to censor.Follow up from:
hello..thnx for replying so quickly, this site is actually the first place im interactive with, you guys are really good at what you do in my opinion. when u come to think of it, most tradegies nowadays are religon related.. like in the indian region, middle east, chechnya, somalia, america's 9/11 tradegy, etc... theres also tribal.. anyways. thank again.. i was wondering if youd like me to write about anything else which you guys could be interested in. i dont have much to do nowadays, so id be ahppy to help :] send my regards to all the good working ethical ppl around you. bye
Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, I think I recall you mentioned you were from Jordan - is this correct? Could you write something on the state of religion there? Like...
1. What are the good things and bad things that religion does there?
2. How do the religions get along with each other?
3. How does religion get along with non-religious people?
4. What are freedoms like there?
Also, you mentioned that you were in Palestinian areas. Do you think you could write anything on these questions there? That would be greatly appreciated and we could add it to the "World Index" section on our site.
I guess the Catholic Church has a bunch of "get out of jail free" cards. Like: "If you have molested 2 or 3 kids there is still hope for you."
After that you are de-frocked, but not de-fu#%@ed. What ever happened to going to jail as a child molester? What about the Cardinals that covered it up? Isn't that conspiracy, or harboring a criminal? The poor church, they are so picked on. Christianity under attack. Immoral bastards.
Response from Ethical Atheist: It is a great mystery that you or I would go to prison if we committed these horrible acts, yet the Church is somehow immune to the laws of our country. Why is this?! If any readers can explain, please do so HERE.
On the news the other night, a reporter announced that the "Pope" made a statement that "child molestation is a sin and a crime". - Pure Genius isn't he!!! I had to laugh, which is worse in the church's eyes? Sin or Crime - before they admitted it was sin but not crime. Crime cuts into your bottom line budget... But sin, well, everyone does that.....so lame!
My theory [on extinction of the dinosaurs] is that Satan was winning right up to the K-T point by infecting the earth with pests. Then, God threw a big rock at him and it hit the earth and destroyed the insects and dino's. Just as God designed it. God than blew the dust around the world so that all the dead plants and animals were covered immediately thus giving rise to the abundance of fossils. What do you think? Can I get published? Pretty scientific.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Excellent theory! It answers the long burning question that if fossils were placed there by the Devil, then why didn't God just stop him! You theory proves that he did by hurling a huge divine rock at Satan! Journal of Science - here we come!

Was just introduced to your website by a fellow Idahoan and skeptic, Gary Bennett. Keep me informed of your "activities."
Response from Ethical Atheist: Thanks. We'll keep you informed. I'll add your to the email list of new articles if you like. Regarding activities, right now we're very busy with a rewrite of the Flat Earth eBook. We've also got some major new sections coming including fossils, minerals and meteorites... not exactly atheist, but educational - actually this is what leads many to start questioning the Bible.

about
the group a/b question. id fall into more or less group B.. the reason
for this picking is coz the catholic church is basically a capitalist enterprise
to steal from the poor and give to the dumb..in the days when the church
used to sell bonds for people to go off to heaven.. they made alot of $$$..
but then some rich fella came along, and said he wanted to buy all of hell..so
with the right amount of money he bought hell for himself..later on, people
thought that because this person has all of hell, then we should end up
in heaven..so the church had to buy back "hell" for a higher price... this
my friends is what the church.. roman, catholic or whatever is about..
id also like to point out that in islam we have an economic system which
if worked properly would work things out for all.. most archtitecture in
the islamic world is partly due to islam..

I accidentally found your website. I had no idea that there was support/forum for atheists. I personally have subscribed to nonsecular ethics for most of my life. Anyway I almost pissed my pants when I came across the jesus sports statues in the ridiculous religious merchandise section. I had to check the link to make sure it wasn't a hoax. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Thanks & keep up the good work.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Thanks for the kind words. Glad you found us and enjoyed the jesus sports statues. We too laugh every time we think about Jesus playing football. Pretty amazing stuff they come up with!

Just
read this one. Do you know if all the tax-free money the U.S. churches
steal....err...collect goes to the Vatican?
Also, a friend just got back from Europe, mainly Italy. She is very religious but was pissed off at the Catholic church because hundreds of years ago the Church took most of the marble facing off of the Roman buildings and took it to the Vatican.
Bunch of child molesting, tax evading, superstitious thieves.
I like the way you are objective by showing both sides - I doubt there is a "christian" web site that would do that.
{RE:

I
see "dead people" ....definitely I'm in the group b category. However,
now when I see anything Catholic, I think of child molesters.
Star Jones, the Britney Spears of Payless Shoes, is making rude slurs about Atheist on her show, 'The View'. Just a bunch of bullshit like: nonbelievers aren't fit to be president and she would possibly (key word) let an atheist baby sit her kids. It's not like I shop there anyway.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Thanks for making us aware of this. To our readers, for more information, see our new page "Star Jones Star Jones says 'No' to an Atheist President".
I'm not sure why this is still a discussion. The fact that the earth was round was well known and accepted in the Middle Ages among most educated people, most of whom were in the church. Not that references to "flat earths" can't be found from the period, but the a geocentric model of the solar system with a spherical earth was the general model. Read Dante's inferno and the strange contortions he has to go through as he passed through the center of the earth on his way from Hell to Mount Pergatory. Dante was no astronomical revisionist! It has always annoyed me that I was taught in primary school that everyone on the Middle Ages thought that the earth was flat and that it was Christopher Columbus who proved that the earth was round...I don't even know where to begin on how silly this is (not that everyone was taught this, but quite a few people that I've queried about this admit to having been taught this). Usually the criticism of the church and its cosmology centers around the earth-centered/sun-centered debate. Here you have a point, although it was a model inherited from the Greeks (omit Eristothenes). An great exhibit a few years back at the Ontario Science Center displayed a mechanical model of a sun-centered and an earth centered solar system. Each was "correct". It just depends on where you decide your point of reference will be. Of course, the math for a geocentric model is very complicated...and to apply a theory of gravity to it would have been quite a challenge for Newton. I liked the exhibit because it said a lot about apply "truth" to science. A much more interesting question is "how do I know the earth is round?" I mean, not just by reading it in a book, or by looking at pictures from space. But how can I walk outside, look around, and determine that the earth must be round and not flat. Once you teach that to kids, you've truly taught them science...not just a fact to remember. But I'm getting off track. The Middle Ages, like most times, had many people thinking different things...even in the church. I don't know the work of Jeffrey Russell, but I can sympathise with his effort to point out that a flat earth was not the dominant view of the church. Good luck with your book. Make sure that you are "promoting education in science" and not just bashing the church. Most histories, including the Catholic Church's, aren't so black and white. Your link was down, but I look forward to reading your e-book. I find this subject interesting.

Response from Ethical Atheist: Thanks for writing. Yes, the eBook was taken down for a rewrite because it was seriously flawed. It is now almost complete and come to many of the same conclusions you list in your email. I'll read through it carefully and make sure I address the issues you mentioned. I now have the same info on Dante, Columbus, etc. It was a great learning experience for me, because I started out thinking I would reach very different conclusion that I did in the end. I should have it up by Wed.

Atheist or Religious? None
i enjoyed reading your articles, but i've noticed its a conflict between christians and atheists, personally i see atheists better off than christians. im muslim, and i guess im supposed to kill you guys somehow, and try to convert christians, but im not bothered. but i do have faith in god and the quraan, im looking forward for a section with the facts and things the quraan got wrong, as in the earth is flat problem in the bible. basically i think religons and beleifs and non-beleivers should keep to them selves, in islam , its a way of life, not really riligon, so i cant make a separation from my working life and my religeous life. anyways. i have alot of atheist friends, and i find them less violent then christian and jewish people. especially jews, because the second i say im a muslim they have a fit. maybe ill just say im an athiest and just keep my way of life in a shadow inside me.what you think?
Response from Ethical Atheist: Well, yes... we're atheists, but no need to kill us. :) We are very peaceful people and have no reason to get involved in all the religious fighting. In fact, we are quite amazed that there can be such violence between 3 religious groups who are all descendants of Abraham (you might have seen this article on our site). We are obviously completely against the terrorist actions of the 9/11 attacks and all the suicide bombers in Israel. This is no solution to the conflict. However, many here are very frustrated with Israel's arrogant actions in the Middle East and towards America. America is supposed to be Israel's ally right? But, they don't listen to us either. We've asked that they get out of Palestinian areas and they totally ignored us and said "No"! Throughout history, we have caught Israeli spies in our government too. These are not the actions of a friend. I'm always amazed that we continue to give them the level of support that we do, when they seem to constantly show they are concerned about nobody but themselves. It's just a very frustrating situation that never seems to get any better. I'm probably in the minority here in the U.S. because I'm quite angered by the constant arrogance and violent actions of Israel. To me, it seems like Israel shares a lot of the blame in all the turmoil. America has typically taken the side of "democracies" to promote freedoms of the average citizen to choose their own governments. This is a big reason for our support of Israel. Plus, many western nations feel an obligation to support them for their mistreatment in Europe during World War II. However, we personally don't believe that giving them a country in the Middle East after WWII was a good solution. Ironically, America is often blamed for doing this when, in fact, the British were the originators of this 'solution'. I'm not knocking the British, it's just that with hindsight, it doesn't seem like it was a very good long term solution for any of us to have supported. Today, Jewish Americans hold very prominent positions in American government and in the financial community. Because of this, their opinions seem to carry a higher weight than the rest of us. In my opinion, that is why Israel continues to have unquestionable support from the America regardless of their arrogant actions. It is also my opinion that if this were not true, America would expect a lot better actions out of Israel to continue to get our support.[NOTE: JUST A REMINDER THAT THE FOLLOWING IS A READER'S VIEW, NOT OURS... BUT WE TRY NOT TO CENSOR.]I'm curious as to what solution you feel would work to end the constant killing? I've often thought something drastic is necessary to completely separate the fighting factions. For example, we have lots of empty land here in the U.S. Why relocate Israel to America? They could be given similar land in Nevada or Utah and we could even move some sacred temples there too. Actually, if we put them in Utah, war would probably break out between the Jews and the Mormons. Damn religious intolerance! But, I'll get of my soapbox now.
Regarding you looking forward to a quraan section on our site, I must admit that our knowledge of this book is limited. (Even more limited than our knowledge of the Bible). We're currently working on a eBook on flat earth thinking by Europeans in ancient history. We were very encouraged to see that the Arab civilizations of that time were MUCH more advanced in science than the Europeans. From what we've found, Arabs and Muslims continued the science and astronomy of the Greeks and Romans, while the Europeans tried to hide all of this because it didn't agree with the Bible. As far as criticism of the quraan (Koran), the only thing I really know and can point to is (Koran 47:4-6) which I believe is something like this translated: "So (believers! now that you know the will of your Lord) when you meet in (regular) battle those who disbelieve strike off their heads ... As of those who are slain in the cause of Allâh He will never let their works go in vain. He will guide them (to success) and will improve their condition. Rather He will admit them into the Garden which He has made known to them in the Qur'ân." That's one of my major complaints about all religions is that they all seem to be so intolerant of each other. Can't we all just get along on this tiny piece of the universe?
As far as Jews and Christians being violent towards you when you say you are Muslim - I'm not sure it would be any better if you said you were atheist. All religions seem to hate us. The only thing that saves us is that we are all over. We're spread out and not in one geographic location, so they can't roll tanks in and wipe us out, but I'm sure they would want to if they could. Our president, George W., and his Dad (Bush Sr.) certainly don't think much of us! They don't even consider atheists to be citizens of the U.S.!
Also, the Ethical Atheist doesn't have any plans to write about errors in the Koran. But, if you are really interested in that, I've been told there is a relevant book called "Why I'm not a Muslim." The author wrote this after reading a book by Bertrand Russell called "Why I'm not a Christian".
We'd love to hear more from you. Especially your thoughts on how the never-ending turmoil in the Middle East could be solved. What do you think about moving all the Israelis to the desert in America? Anyway, have a nice day and thanks for writing.

id first like to thank you for your long reply, and for not placing me in the hate mail part. well to start about the palestinian/israeli conflict.. i dont think the israeli's should be there. i dont mind jews being there (israeli's = zionists), coz some of them are arabs themselves, under islamic rule all three religons lived in peace, to prove my point more, here in Jordan there arent problmes at all between christians and muslims. i thought about having the jews go to canada or somewhere else which is pretty empty, this was 50 years ago, and i bet it wouldnt have been a problem, the zionists first thought about egypt, but theyd have the same problem with the palestinians as they do now, but they would be 100 times more ppl.probably NASA could help us out creating a jewish state on Mars. i dont really understand the mentality of zionists. i feel sorry for what happened to them in would war, but if you come to think about it, they werent that great, in nazi germany, the only flag allowed to fly i [?missing?] for the moment
what i see as a good solution is to have a palestinian state, and have all the settlements in the west bank and gaza out, and have a border controlled by international forces. ive been watching the news and theres all these people talking about how terrorists would attack these forces, if they were mostly americans i think this would happen, and probably this is why israel wouldnt mind it to much, coz then we'd look bad again. ive been to palestine a couple of times and worked there, i think if these forces were there theyd even feel comfortable. the palestinians need the forces. about the term terrorist, im getting sick of it, i think it should be changed into " persons who have lost rights and want them back " ... but there are some terrorist groups, but i dont think the palestinian groups are, but at the same time i dont approve attacks against civilians. i know alot of people who are willing to kill themselves in order to kill israeli troops. the mentality to this is that most palestinian [?rest missing?]

I noticed that you have the year displayed as "2002" on this your web page.
I suggest you try the new era (global era) format. Instead of 2002, put one of the following: Y2, Yr 2, Year Two. Optionally add "Global Era" or "G.E." like so: Year Two Global Era or Year Two of the Global Era.
In case you need some explanation, see our FAQ at: http://www.go2zero.com/faq.htm. For a sample, see our home page at: http://www.go2zero.com/ (see "Y2" at bottom). This new format has appeared in major newspapers. You can find a sample from an AP article linked near the bottom of our home page. If you make this change, your url will go on a list of "new era compliant" web pages. There are two reasons you might want to do this: 1) Support the conversion to the new global chronology; 2) Bring traffic to your web site. We have been pushing this new chronology idea in the media (including the Associated Press) for about 6 years now. It's been in many newspapers and magazines around the world. We are currently focusing on radio. The media is very interested in seeing examples where people are using the new year numbering system. Recent dialog with media members includes the Associated Press and the editors of the New York Times. We will be handing them our list of new era compliant web pages. The pages are listed in the order we receive notification of new era compliance (we just started this part of the campaign - you could be near the top of the list). http://www.go2zero.com/new_era_sites.html. So, you will get some free publicity in conventional media (especially radio and newspapers). There is no need to change the dates on all your pages. We are only asking for one page (it could be a single date). Please, make the change and notify us (email or phone). Your url will be immediately added to the list.
Thank
you.

Response from Ethical Atheist: Interesting concept, though EXTREMELY difficult to implement. Think of the billions of historical documents that use the B.C. & A.D. standard. We do NOT like year references being based on the supposed year Jesus was born either. Wouldn't your proposal still be based on the birth of Jesus? It would just have a 2000 year offset applied to it? I'm sure you know that there's much debate on the year Jesus was actually born. Dionysius Exiguus (wrongly) fixed Jesus' birth year and we've been haunted by it ever since. We've heard it argued that it was actually anywhere from 12 B.C. to 4 B.C. So, we're all wrong already. In addition, there was no year 0 because the number had no representation in Roman numerals. So, we have a gap that confuses people to this day. We would only be adding to those if everyone didn't convert from the B.C/A.D. convention. And what of all the other calendars? We have the following with corresponding calendars and their approximate years at our year 2000: Babylonian - Year 2749, Buddhist - Year 2544, Egyptian - Year 6236, Greek - Kiyahk 1716, Islamic - Ramadan 1378, Hebrew - Teveth 5760, etc, etc. To think that we'd get rid of all these is just wishful thinking, in our opinion. (We can't even get rid of English units of measure in favor of metric, though the later are clearly easier.Follow up from:Because our current system doesn't even accurately reflect what it is named after, we prefer to just use the convention CE stands for "Common Era" instead of AD, which stands for "Anno Domini" in Latin or "the year of the Lord" in English; and BCE which stands for "Before the Common Era". At least this would correct the current misnomer, while retaining the existing numerical sequence of historical documents.
But, allow us to digress... Calendars are all rather arbitrary because they all provide years in reference to some event, usually an event with some religious significance. Why not have a calendar based on the approximate date of the Big Bang? That's a fairly significant event! Of course, then you could divide that number by a billion to get rid of all those pesky zeroes. Then, divide the result by Pi, or 3.14159? We've always held a special place in our hearts for this number...
Thank you for your thoughtful response. I can assure you that the issues you raise have been thoroughly explored by scientists and scholars around the world -- including such luminaries as Paul Kurtz (SUNY), Richard Landes (Boston Univ) and Olov Ostberg (Sweden) to name a few. You don't need to worry about how every one else will manage it. We only ask that you adjust the display of the year on your web site. You don't need to worry about implementing it everywhere. Just start with one page! It's easy. The trail blazing work has been done. This year numbering is accepted everywhere it's been used -- including the U.S. government. The Patent and Trademark Office has said that "The term 'YEAR ZERO' is commonly used to refer to the year 2000." Many people have been using this year numbering on a wide variety of documents with no difficulty. "If secularists can call for taking God out of public schools, why not take Christ out of the calendar? That's the plan of the Year Zero Campaign." - WORLD magazine (1998). You do have a point about retaining some Christian connection with the Year Zero just being an offset of 2000 years to the B.C./A.D. reference, but this is not a bad thing and will ease acceptance. In other words, year zero acknowledges Christianity while moving on. This is also an effective counter to the charge that we seek to "erase the past and start history over from scratch." (WORLD magazine). "I enthusiastically endorse the concept of YEAR ZERO. The present calendar is based on the myth of Jesus Christ's birth. We don't know for sure when he was born or even if he ever lived. In any case, the bulk of humankind are not Christians, so why impose an ancient religious calendar on everyone? Let's begin anew. Human consciousness is now global: we need a new planetary ethics expressing this and transcending the chauvinistic divisions of the past. Year 0 can mark a new beginning, not Armageddon, but resorgimento and a reawakening to our common transnational human interdependence. Bravo to the Year Zero movement. " - Paul Kurtz
I sent my former college room-mate your ethical atheist web site - she really liked it! I knew she would - because it's sooo good! I am forwarding her comments to you - the Tulsa World newspaper gets her mad everyday because it very fundamentalist, christian-slanted and of course there are no other competing newspapers with educated more open minded views. She was also sharing with me some book that she heard about. See below... we are not alone and your web-site is great!
{from former college room-mate}
You might want to check this out. I read about it on Salon.com today. "This Dark World" by Carolyn S. Briggs about a woman who immersed herself in Christian Fundamentalism and survived!!!!!!I really like the ethical athiest website. It's hilarious to read the hate mail. That reminds me... yesterday there was an editorial in the Tulsa paper by a man who insisted that the Bible is historically accurate. He specifically addressed Genesis and the creation story. His proof? None, of course. Apparently he was rebutting an earlier editorial by a SANE person who labeled the Bible as myth.
Atheist or Religious? i dislike both
I like your website, enjoyed the religious merchandise page however I have one complaint all the reasons for not believing the bible or in god [the christian one] are easily explained for instance thou shalt not kill could mean thou shalt not murder which is different and anything meaning or definition would come from god [since they say he is the first and last] bottom line either believe or don't doubt exist on both sides or at least should p.s. I still like your website.

You put me in the hatemail portion last time-but i forgive you. I have a question that i would like you to get out to your christian readers please, pleeeaaase, tell me the logic behind "atheist have committed more murders..." and? I may be wrong but i thought atheism was a lack of faith in a god not really a movement. It would be like saying "more murders have happened by people that are not from Ohio, than by people that were from Ohio, therefore its bad if your not from Ohio?" Please explain your logic.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Actually, I didn't intend to put it in that section. In fact, that page should probably be renamed because "Hate" is pretty strong. Most of these emails are not of a hateful nature at all. Maybe "Unfavorable". In any case, you said "I like your website" which is "Favorable" right? : )Follow up from:Yes, I too do not understand the logic behind "atheist have committed more murders...". We actually had a debate with a Christian who claimed that there's a difference between "killing" like you find throughout the Bible and "murdering". They were trying to say that in the Ten Commandments, it really means "Thou shalt not murder". So to them, there is no conflict with the Bible commanding followers not to kill and the fact that all the Biblical characters were not only killing, they were wiping out entire civilizations! Because it was God's will, it was not murdering, they claimed. This logic completely escapes us! But it is very typical thinking of many Christians. It's amazing they don't 'hurt' something up there in their gray matter with all that twisting going on. The problem with this person and most theists is that they appear to not follow reason and are completely opposed to any logical argument....
Regarding a "movement", did you find us stating somewhere that atheism was a movement? If so, it was in error. Your emails are now out of the hate section.
Atheist or Religious? trutheist
i added trutheist this time to clarify my stance-i only pledge allegiance to truth. no-you did not state that athiesm was a movement-but many of your readers seem to make that conclusion the problem i have with some [only some] of the arguements against the christians is that some concepts have many interpretations-they could be right depending on how you look at them what i think we should do[as intelligent truth seeking people] is listen [something BOTH christians and atheist fail to do] i understand how hard this is when people say things that are beyond stupidity but we need to consider them [those that oppose truth] as children listen to what they say, show them why they are wrong p.s. unless of course they start burning us at the stake again
Too
true! I firmly believe that the "well meaning" christians are trying
to take our world to "hell" fast!
I noticed that you do not have a favicon setup on ethicalatheist.com. If you have an idea for an Icon to represent your website on a user's "Favorites" list, I'd be happy to make it for you and show you how to set it up if you don't have the capability. If you don't have any ideas for Icons I can probably suggest a few.
Response from Ethical Atheist: That would be great!Follow up from:
Here's a collection of a few icons that I've made. I created the Darwin ones from the image on your website. The 16x16 images are what a person would see in their Internet Explorer "favorites" window once they've bookmarked your site as well as in the Address bar before the URL. The 32x32 icons are what they'd see if they created a link to your site on their desktop. I haven't made 32x32 versions of the "no god" and "no fish" icons yet, but if you like them I can do it pretty quickly. If you have another idea I can certainly try to do it. Once you've decided what you want, I'll put the 16x16 and 32x32 images together in an icon resource file for you.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Very cool - thanks! I must admit that until you mentioned favicons, I had never heard of them before. I've always been strongly in the Netscape camp and wasn't aware of this feature in IE. I did a little search for favicon on Google last night to get a better understanding of the feature. I must get on my soapbox for a moment here. I guess if I were to believe in a devil, it might be Bill Gates - ha! I recently installed a seemingly innocent piece of software that millions of Americans use. As part of this install, they conveniently and most destructively installed IE5 which took over my computer and possessed it with the Beelzebub Gates. Most of my file type settings were changed to Gates' preferred installation. BUT, I'LL GET OFF MY SOAPBOX NOW. I guess I need to just become assimilated into the Borg. I REALLY appreciate your making the icons for me. I think I'll use the "EA" icon.

Answer: One. Of course, first he's got to sue to get equal rights to display his secular light bulb alongside the xtian lightbulb in a public forum. Then he has to return occasionally to replace it after "well meaning" xtians come by and break it in the name of god.
Response from Ethical Atheist: This is excellent! I laughed so hard at the truth of this! Thank you! P.S. Would you like to be given credit as contributing this? I prefer to give credit where it's due unless you wish to remain anonymous...{Response from Rick}

Hey, this is an excellent website! I hope you'll continue to write on these topics. NT
Atheist or Religious? Atheist until proven otherwise....
Enjoyed reading your site. Just going through your eBook on the Flat Earth. But as I read this particular response on your feedback page, I immediately thought: "But why couldn't 'God' have written a scientifically testable version of the Bible which would provide real and testable claims." Why not provide a scientific manual of the world around us that could only have been written by the actual creator of the Universe? The laymen can read the bible, the scientists can read the scientific version of the bible. Of course, you and I know why "he" didn't do that....
Response from Ethical Atheist: Good point. That would have saved us a lot of time trying to figure out "his" grand universe. "He" could have spoken directly through a scientist to write the book and save all the violence, sex & murder for the other book. ha.

This is Peter, from Global’s GAB. I was perusing your web site and came across mention of Galileo and the Church and I remembered this article from the Sept/Oct 2001 issue of The Skeptical Inquirer. Thought you might be interested because it does change the popular view if this famous incident. I have a problem with the author’s claim at the end, however, in which he states “For most of the medieval and Renaissance periods, and even stretching into the eighteenth century Enlightenment, the primary supporter of research and teaching in the sciences was the Roman Catholic Church.” I’d be very interested in your take on this. - Peter
Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, we recall this article from Skeptical Inquirer (one of my most
favorite reads). We had to laugh at this part:“For most of the medieval and Renaissance periods, and even stretching into the eighteenth century Enlightenment, the primary supporter of research and teaching in the sciences was the Roman Catholic Church.” - Skeptical Inquirer, Sept/Oct 2001 issueI'm surprised that SI let that get through, and I'm rather irked at the statement. My take on it after doing some reading is that it's partially true and partially false. I did come across some material talking about how the Church began to promote and encourage research and teaching in the Arts and Sciences in some areas. For example, they really pushed for more beautiful and structurally sound architecture which they used in building extravagant churches. However, they really attempted to control education and make it only available through theistic sources (i.e. the Roman Catholic Church). So, that's the "partially true" portion of the answer. The "partially false" part is that the Church encouraged education in the Sciences only in certain areas. They discouraged anything that conflicted with Scripture and
promptly put an end to it wherever possible. They made scientific authors preface their work with statements such as "This is only theoretical and not meant to represent reality." They forced scientific authors like Galileo and others to visit the pope for proper "realignment". They also used threats of torture, prison and death to any who disobeyed. So, in my opinion, the censorship of science far outweighs any promotion of science they may have done.
I think you should have a new links section for teenagers who are atheist. I myself have created a club for teenage atheists like myself. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Growing_Up_Atheist/ Just an Idea. There are other groups on Yahoo too.
Response from Ethical Atheist: I just joined your group. I'm not a teenager anymore, but wanted to post a message here, so I joined. I've added a link to your "Growing_Up_Atheist" group on the The Ethical Atheist. It's on our links page under a new "Atheist Sites for Teenagers" heading.Your link appears at: http://www.ethicalatheist.com/docs/links.html#teenagers
Happy to hear you have started the group. Good luck with it. I must say that when I was a teenager, dealing with religious issues was VERY difficult for me. I was raised in a Southern Baptist home and was required to attend church. I did this grudgingly until I was about 15, at which time I told my parents I didn't want to go anymore. Needless to say, they were not happy with this and still made me go. I considered this to be a personal decision that everyone should make, even teenagers. So, I disobeyed them and "said" I was going to the early service, which I did not. While I don't recommend lying to your parents, I do recommend a serious talk with them on the issue if you find yourself in the situation I did. Many non-believers remain silent and continue going to Church... they may marry someone just like them and the whole family attends church because they think it is "the right thing to do". Or, their family may pressure them to continue attending in later life. I've always been curious how many people who attend church regularly *actually* believe and how many just go through the motions because it's expected of them. My recommendation is to "Do what you think is right, whether that is attending church or not. Don't listen to anyone else and begin making your own decisions. As you go through life, you will feel much better about yourself if you make your own decisions - right or wrong." Good luck to you all! Thanks and good day! - Ethical Atheist

For now, I left the contents there, but removed your name and email address until I hear from you. If you want it removed completely, just say the word. Again, please accept my apologies. I like this excerpt from the message below.... "If the resurrection never took place, then the Christian faith is based on a lie and people have no true hope for life after they die?" This proves in my mind that people made it all up...because everyone is so fricking hung-up on living forever! Let's totally discount this life and put all our eggs in the basket of death...for hopes we too will live again. It's a very crafty myth! Of course, I am a cynic when it comes to virgin births and rising from the dead. I would like to know what would happen if someone would dig up Christ's body and be able to prove it was him... I bet the christians would spend all their efforts in trying to prove it was not really his body or some other explanation for it...
Atheist or Religious? Atheist
After reading the comments of various Christian leaders on the website, I have to arrived at the conclusion that these people are sitting in the dark (ignorance) without any means of illumination at all. The rise of literacy has done nothing to increase the use of reason and critical thinking on this planet. Some of the same people who do not believe in the supernatural readily accept religions that are entirely based upon supernatural claims.
Response from Ethical Atheist: The only thing we can put hope in is that we are, in fact, progressing in some areas like astronomy, paleontology/evolution, etc. It wasn't that long ago when people were jailed, burned at the stake and exiled for having views that opposed Christianity and the Scriptures (e.g. flat earth, geocentric earth). In that light, it looks like we've come a long way... and it's getting better every day (we hope). Thanks for contacting us!

Regarding your page "WEBSITE REVIEW: www.ChristianAnswers.net ": Wow, very good reading. I am impressed and I like the disclaimer...it's so true almost every Christian I can think of always does "selective" reasoning when it comes to the bible between the literal interpretations versus the metaphorical especially when they conflict. BTW,
love your site I've been going through it all day so far!
Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, I was just talking about the same thing with someone just minutes ago. Like you, I know that they are not swayed by the facts, but I can't seem to stop either. Thanks for the comments on my site! The above reference to a "twisted mind of a fundie" (fundamentalist) was in response to an ongoing newsgroup discussion on alt.astronomy (believe it or not). The "fundie" was Sondi Shrum <1sshrum@jam.rr.com>. Partial transcript follows.
[Ethical Atheist] - Killing isn't bad?! Isn't that one of your Ten Commandments? Yes, killing goes on all the time, but does that make it right? Historically, the most killing has been done for two reasons: national concerns & religion. And religion, by far, holds the "most kills" title. Just because someone or some society doesn't hold the same mythological views as you doesn't give you the right to wipe them off the planet. And the irony is that atheists are accused of not having morals or ethics because we don't have faith. Unbelievable![Sondi Shrum] - No, killing is not bad - murder is. We kill and train to kill all the time. Just watch the news about Taliban and Al Q fighters in Afgan. Taking the women and children that are left without families - caring for them - marrying them - adopting them is also not bad.... raping is.
[Ethical Atheist] - You missed my point. Of course their is penalties, but why is your good book so filled with raping?
[Sondi Shrum] - No - raping is bad and there was a penalty set for it at that time. Also, were not his daughters "on-top" after they got him drunk - and they did this to him because he was lonely and without a mate at the time.
[Ethical Atheist] - So, incest is O.K. if the daughter(s) initiate it?! That's sick!
[Sondi Shrum] - Why is incest determined immoral by today's society?
[Ethical Atheist] - Yes, incest is bad when it deals with an authoritarian figure and child sex abuse. But, it sounds like you are saying it's O.K. to have sex with your daughter if she's of child-bearing age??? In my book (not the bible), that's a little wacko!

I'm from Poland and I'm just writing about irreligion and its laws. You shall hear about irreligion exhibition in Holland unfortunately large critisized hear in Poland. Would you be so kind as to send me some infos about irreligion in other countries or just your reflections? Also I'm glad to have possibility to look so many atheistic web sites, and i'm happy there's also yours cause like not many it's not only about atheism but also about ethics which is very important subject. Thank you for your work and the heart you gave in it.
Also, there's a poem "I wont go away" and one question - do you feel offended by religious people? I mean the author wants so much explain he is as good as everybody alse so ask myself why ?
Response from Ethical Atheist: Thank you for writing and for your kind words of support. People like you give me the strength to continue with my efforts. I would love to hear more about religious and atheist topics in Poland. I'm still working on articles related to other countries. So far, readers have provided information on the U.K. and Netherlands which you can find on our World Index at http://www.ethicalatheist.com/index_world.html. America has many laws designed to keep Church and State separate as compared to some other countries, but this line is often crossed. The irony in this is that religious persecution was one of the main reasons that early Americans arrived here from Europe. Could you send me your reflections on Poland? In response to your question about being offended by religious people: Absolutely, Christians (and other religions) are extremely critical of atheists. They believe that you cannot have ethics or morals without faith in their God. I would be shunned by my neighbors, friends and family if they knew I was an atheist and owner of The Ethical Atheist website. To give you an example, our former president George Bush (current president's Dad) said, "No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God." (George Bush, to a reporter in 1988, while serving as vice-president and running for President). The environment here is very hostile towards atheists.
Another contradiction came to mind the other day. In the movie "The Prince of Egypt" Moses was saying "Let my people go". I thought God created the heavens and the earth, including men and women? Evidently the non-Hebrews were aliens put on the earth by the devil. Oh wait, God created the devil didn't he/she/it. So the non-Hebrews were created by God. No wait, they weren't God's people. Does it say in the bible that God created paradoxes? I'm so confused, I need to go pray.
Response from Ethical Atheist: With God, all things are possible. Yes, brother, you do need to pray. Ha!

Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, we recall this article from Skeptical Inquirer (one of our most favorite reads). We had to laugh at the part about the Roman Catholic Church being the primary supporter of research in the sciences. It's surprising that the SI let that get through. We are rather outraged at the statement. We'll have to get back with you on this after we've given it a little research of our own. Hey, I'm very glad you stopped by HeresyHouse.com, and thanks for signing the guestbook. As the web designer for the Atheist Alliance, I've been aware of your work for some time now, and you're doing a great job. One thing, I spent some time on your site tonight, reading and enjoying, but do you think I could talk you into adding a link for HeresyHouse.com on your links page? I notice you've got EvolveFish, and rightly so, as Gary has been doing this longer than almost anybody (atheist retail, that is), and I even sold him a shirt this week, but it sometimes seems like I'm hitting my head against a wall, trying to generate word-of-mouth advertising (the only kind I can afford). Everyone's heard of Evolvefish, and I'd like to attain that status for HeresyHouse some day... all new designs, completely original blasphemies... people are getting the message, but slowly. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated, and thanks again for dropping by. Keep fighting the good fight. - Dave Feroe
Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, absolutely, I'll add a link to HeresyHouse.com. Keep up the good work. We appreciate your site and your efforts for Atheist Alliance.

A beautiful site. I've been busy for more than an hour to 'walk' through the different pages etc. and I wish that something like that is possible in the Netherlands (where I come from). My English is not so well to understand all the words and sentences, but in general I can follow it. Carry on with it, you get my support.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Thank you for your comments and your support. You said, "I wish that something like that is possible in the Netherlands". Is it because of the religious environment that it wouldn't be possible? Can you tell me a little about how things are there in the Netherlands? I would be very interested in knowing and may even make a page about the Netherlands to add to my "World Index" at: http://www.ethicalatheist.com/index_world.html.

I enjoyed your site, but I think that you need to review your geological periods. Maybe you could add a number after the Perm-periods, Perm I and Perm II would be less confusing than two periods with the same name and the same length.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Thank you for pointing out the error in the geological time periods. It will be corrected soon. We feel honored that someone who would notice this error is among our readers. With your knowledge of geological periods, you may be interested in a new section coming to the Ethical Atheist on fossils. It is currently in work and will include photos and details on a wide variety of specimens from my personal collection.

Please include on your book list works by Carl Sagan (including those you quote in other places). He has credibility with religious types because of all the PBS specials, etc. he used to do. I found his comments on the afterlife (lack of) and the science (as the best means for reasoning and logical thought) to be compelling.

I see Darwin's "Origin of Species" listed under recommended reading. Have you heard of a book entitled, "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by J. McDowell? I have not read the book, but it claims to refute many of Darwin's claims and back it up with scientific evidence - most of which was not available to Darwin 150 years ago. Has anyone on your staff read this book and done a review to determine its trustworthiness or counter its claims? If not, is this something that "Ethical Atheist" is willing to due for the benefit of its readers? Looking forward to your response.

Atheist Poetry Anthology. Confront, question, or deny the god of your youth, the sacred text of your culture. Express your disbelief, disapproval, doubt, or dismay. Looking for honest, thought-provoking poetry daring to speak against the social norm of belief and/or attempting to take the stigma from nonbelief. Interested in nontheism expressed positively rather than solely in opposition to atheism. Avoid gratuitous vulgarity and unfocused anger. We feel that atheism is often defined too narrowly and inaccurately. "A theos" means "without god(s)". If there is no god you believe in, if you are not a theist, you are, by definition, an atheist. These categories fit anthology also: "humanist", "freethought", "agnostic", "biblical revisionist", "sacrilegious"... Up to 6 poems, SASE. Incarnate Muse c/o Michelle Rhea P.O.Box 5756 Santa Barbara CA 93150 or Michelle.Rhea@gte.net. (If emailing, put poems in body of text, not as attachment.) Pays copies. Deadline July 1. Need ideas? your website very much, keep up the good work!
I'm sixteen years old, i've been an atheist for a few years now. You have a very good site. I was reading the Quotes - Against the Separation of Church and State. When I read the first one I thought it was a parody of an evangelist, it seemed too extreme to be an actual statement. When I saw Pat Robertson's name under the quote I almost cried. This level of oppresion and blindness is disturbing. I never thought that there were people out there as auto-toxic as that. I wish there was something I could do to help ensure that people like that will hold no sway on my life or the lives of anyone. Thank you, for this site, it is a true home for freethinkers and humanists.
Response from Ethical Atheist: Yes, Robertson is very scary. I used to think Jerry Falwell was bad, but Robertson's got him beat. I agree with you in your desire that Roberstson's impact on society be limited. The only thing I know to do is educate people on what he is doing and why it is bad. I'm working on an article about Robertson that will expose more of his fanaticism. A major problem with religion and the non-thinking mind is that it lets people like Robertson flourish. His follows just accept him without question - just as they do with their religion....
That's pretty cool! You know I think it would take the discovery of a planet where life evolved and was made extinct by religious wars before anyone would realize how ridiculous it all is but then... that planet will probably be earth!

I grew up in northeast Oklahoma where my best of friends and I formed a small group we called AYAC {atheist youth against Christianity}. Since high school, I have moved to Little Rock, AR, and I must say that as an atheist in this state I am treated like an enemy. I must say I DO enjoy it. At first, I felt it best to stay quiet about my beliefs but hypocritical Christians I was in college with pushed me enough to the point I began speaking out against their fairy-tale, fantasy savior. Militant Christians blocked every entrance to my campus with "prophetic" propaganda. I made my stand alone to the President of my school and immediately the soldiers of faith departed. However, there are many operations that need shut down. I would like your help, if possible, to have some sort of coalition organization state-to-state. I understand it would be more work than you might want to do, but atheists across the country NEED a forum to band together and make our STAND. Currently, I am finishing up on my political science degree and HOPE to begin studies at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law by spring '02. Christian voters are many, but we are as well, and it is about time atheists hold office in our government to protect OUR "religious" rights. Thank You for your time, hope you can help at all.
